What car should you buy next? New Zealand's 'Car of the Year 2017' revealed!

You’re therefore probably in need of a new motor. With so much choice on the market, how will you ever decide what to get? Never fear, we’re here with the low down on the AA 2017 Car of the Year, to steer you in the right direction.

Every year the New Zealand Automobile Association holds awards for the latest car models.

For the ‘Car of the Year’ 2017 awards, a car was eligible if it was released during the time period of 1st October 2016 – 30th September 2017. Guild members and judges from the AA drove all 10 cars and marked them based on factors such as design, quality and value.

The model finalists were the following:

  • BMW 5 series
  • Holden Astra
  • Honda Civic hatch
  • Hyundai Ioniq
  • Land Rover Discovery
  • Mazda CX-5
  • ŠKODA Kodiaq
  • Subaru XV
  • Suzuki Ignis
  • Suzuki Swift

And the winner is...

The ŠKODA Kodiaq!

If that’s not quite the ticket, each year they also run ‘Best in Class’ awards, including all vehicles on the market. Depending on whether you’re looking for a new sports car or a micro car, here’s the run down for the 2017 best in each category:

  • Micro/light car – Suzuki Swift
  • Small/compact car – Holden Astra
  • Medium/large car – Volkswagen Arteon
  • Luxury car – BMW 5 Series
  • Sports car – Mazda MX-5
  • Small SUV – Toyota CH-R
  • Medium SUV – Skoda Kodiaq
  • Large SUV – Mazda CX-9
  • Luxury SUV – Land Rover Discovery
  • Utility – Ford Ranger
